Along with the four new members we introduced last month, we now have a total of 14 Board of Directors bringing an incredible amount of experience and a wide range of perspectives to the organization. Stay tuned to our social channels to learn more about each of our new board members and what they are most looking forward to working on in 2025!

The Running Event

Run with Heart in Mind

From Nov 19 - 21 at The Running Event (TRE) in Austin, TX, Runners for Public Lands is bringing its passion, community, and purpose to the foreground through our “Run with Heart in Mind” campaign. We can’t wait to show you glimpses into this community-driven experience, which shows the collective potential of runners and running: what drives us to run, how the act of running changes us, and the places running takes us, physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

We're so thrilled to be partnering up with Nomadix, Teva, and Fractel, as this campaign unlocks connection: between generations, road and trail runners, the public and the private. It shows and reminds us of the power in witnessing, finding, and recognizing common ground: that protecting the planet is protecting our future. That protecting our public lands is protecting our communities. That we all have the ability to make change: it is in our collective hands. We first created "Run with Heart in Mind" for our 5-year anniversary, which you can see a few pictures of below:

If you're going to be in Austin for TRE, make sure to come stop by our booth, but also come visit us in the Switchback Area! This is where our 8' x 8' activation for our "Run with Heart in Mind" campaign will be taking place. Below is a picture of Jess Rogers in the Switchback Area last year. We can't wait to return and gather with so many of our friends from this industry and community.

Advocacy

USFS Hiring Freeze Puts 2025 Race Permits At Risk

Trail running races occurring on national forest lands may be significantly impacted in 2025 by U.S. Forest Service budget and staffing shortfalls.

The U.S. Forest Service recently announced that it will not hire seasonal workers in 2025 (except firefighting staff) due to severe budget shortfalls. The freeze started on October 1, 2024, and will continue through at least September 30, 2025. These staffing and budget shortfalls will have ramifications across all national forests and may significantly impact trail running and trail races taking place on national forest land.

If you plan to direct a race on U.S. Forest Service managed land in 2025, there are a few things you should know and actions you should take right away:

  • Know your 2025 race may be impacted by U.S. Forest Service staff and budget shortfalls.

  • Call your U.S. Forest Service permit administrators now to ask about anticipated changes to the 2025 permitting process.

  • If you have races in different national forests, contact each forest individually - every forest may be impacted differently..

  • Runners for Public Lands is preparing an opportunity for race directors to advocate for more funding to support recreation and trail races on U.S. Forest Service managed land. Check back after the election to add your voice to our letter to Congress requesting more funding for the agency in this urgent time of need.
